Importing & Exporting Trading Specs

The Trading Spec Import & Export dialog is how you can transfer Trading Specs between RuleTrader Test and RuleTrader Live and vice-versa. You can also use it to export and import Trading Specs to file, while also deleting Trading Specs, as a way of managing the number of specs shown on the main Dashboard

Pressing the Import/Export button, below the Trading Specification selector on the first tab of the Live or Test Dashboard, takes you to the Trading Specification Import/Export dialog. This provides the following functions.

  • Import trading specifications from a session: e.g. RuleTrader Test → RuleTrader Live and vice-versa. Simply select the name of the Trading Spec in the other session, then press the Import button. Please note that, if you are setting up the Live system for the first time, you must start the Live system with the imported Trading Specification before you can create any Trading Accounts. Please refer to the Tutorial on Moving To Live Trading for a reminder of how this is done.
  • Import a trading specification from a saved file: This works with files that were previously exported (see next). You can use the … (browser) button to open the Windows File Browser and select the file, or you can enter a name manually (without the file extension). Then click the Import button
  • Export a trading specification and save it as a file: You also have the option to delete the file from the list of Trading Specifications shown in the Specification drop-down in the Trading System group of the first Dashboard tab. This is particularly useful to reduce clutter, if you’re generating a lot of Trading Spec variants, as a result of refining your Spec. It’s also useful for exchanging Trading Specs with fellow RuleTrader users, should you choose to do so. To use this function, follow these steps:
    1. Select the name of a specification from the drop down list and press the Select button
    2. This will enter the name of that specification into the ‘Specification to export’ field. If you just want to export the one Spec, then press either the Export button, or the Export & Delete button, if you want to delete it as well
    3. Alternatively you can edit the specification name, to create a partial name that matches the first part of multiple specification names. If you then append the * wild-card character to the name it will export (and delete if required) all matched specifications. So for example, say you had a number of variants of a Spec you’ve called ‘My Spec’ e.g.
      • My Spec v1.01
      • My Spec v1.02
      • My Spec v1.03
      • My Spec v1.04
      • etc.
    4. Select one of the My Spec specifications, then edit it and add the * to produce: My Spec v1*. Then click the Export (or Export & Delete) button, and all My Spec v1.xx versions will be exported (and deleted)
