Creating A Definition

To create a Named Term, Trading Rule, Trading Strategy selector, or List Selector navigate to the appropriate tab in the Trading Specification Definition dialog. Then select Create from the Definition Operations drop-down list at the bottom of the tab, then click the Do It button next to it. This will open the DEfT Wizard ready to create your definition, as shown below:

The DEfT Wizard at the start of the definition creation process

You’ll note there are two parts to the Wizard. The upper part is where you create the main or parent definition and the lower part is where you create any Private Terms that the main definition will use (or Selector Terms in the case of List Selectors).

When the Wizard opens, it’s ready to start creating the parent definition. Blank fields, in a definition entry line, are displayed at the top ready for you to enter your definition’s details. Below that are instructions, relevant to the current context, which are designed to lead you through the process.

All you need to do is enter a unique name for the definition in the first blank field, select its type from the drop-down list that follows, then press the Next button.

However, if you prefer, you can create Private Terms for the definition first. Just choose the Create option in the Operation drop-down list at the bottom of the Private Term Definitions area and click Do It! The Wizard will then change, as shown below, with the definition entry line moving to the Private Terms area, where you’ll now see its blank fields ready to define the Private Term, with the help text below it, as before.

You’ll also note that a placeholder name, in this case <term 1>, has been entered for the parent definition. To resume editing that definition you just click the Edit Definition button below it. You can do this now, before you’ve started creating your Private Term(s) or after, when you’ve finished them.
