Editing A Definition

To edit a definition you’ve already created, just click the Edit button next to it. This will open the DEfT Wizard in edit mode. Then just click Next repeatedly until you reach the part of the definition you want to change, then make the changes. Then either click Next until you reach the end of the definition or, better still, just click the Finish Editing button in the top right corner of the Wizard to whiz (awful pun intended) you to the end.

As you move through a previously created definition you’ll see two lines – the ‘WAS’ and the ‘NOW’ line – displayed above the definition entry line, as illustrated below (which shows the previous private term we created being edited):

Editing a definition

The ‘WAS’ line shows the whole of the definition that you’re editing, as it was. The ‘NOW’ line shows the new definition that results from your edits to this point (much like the line displayed when you created the definition).

It’s important to note that if you change an option in the definition (for example, you choose market capital instead of profit) that changes the context of the definition, so the remainder of the definition couldn’t be created, as is, from that point, then the WAS and NOW lines will disappear. This is because the Wizard switches out of edit mode back to creation mode, so the data you previously entered for the rest of the definition is no longer available and can’t be reached simply by continuing to click Next.

Because of this, if you’re editing a complex definition, it’s often a good idea to display the definition in the Console before you start editing it, so you’ve got the original to refer to. This is done by checking the checkmark next to the definition then selecting ‘Show selected’ from the Operation drop-down and clicking Do It!
